Decide: is the mortar still workable?

This is the whole gate. If the adhesive can still move, you correct in place; if it has cured, you lift the tile and re-lay it.

Lift a low edge with a shim

Slide the horseshoe shim under the low edge and drive it in until the tile reads flush on the straightedge.

Push down a high edge

For a high tile, tap it flush with a rubber mallet over a wooden block while the mortar is still soft.

Check every joint with a straightedge

Rake the light across the floor and sweep the straightedge over each joint — fix anything still proud before you walk away.

Trim the shim tail after set

Once the mortar cures, snap or trim the exposed shim tail flush with the tile surface and grout over it.

How do you fix tile lippage after the floor has set?
If the adhesive has cured, a shim can no longer move the tile — the fix is to lift the offending tile and re-lay it, and to prevent the same result by clipping the tiles as they go down. That is why the practical answer to lippage is mostly prevention.
What is an acceptable lippage tolerance?
ANSI A108.5 gives 1/32in (0.8mm) for rectified tile and 1/16in (1.6mm) for non-rectified tile. Everything above that is visible, catches the eye in raking light, and becomes a callback.
How much lippage can a horseshoe shim correct?
The shims come in 1.5, 3.0, 5.0 and 6.5mm sizes, so any low edge within that range can be lifted. If the step is bigger than the largest shim, the tile needs to come up and be re-bedded.
Can I fix a tile that is too high with a shim?
