The 0.5mm Problem This System Solves

Lippage is measured in fractions of a millimetre — and it decides whether a floor looks professional.

Even 0.5mm of height difference between two 600×600 tiles catches raking light and catches a trowel edge. The ANSI A108.5 tolerance for rectified tile is 1/32in (0.8mm) of lippage — thinner than a credit card — so a clip-and-wedge system is not an upgrade, it is the standard way to get there. On walls the failure is different: gravity pulls heavy tile down before the adhesive cures, so joints misalign while you wait. Clips pull each joint to a single plane; wedges hold it there; spacers lock the grout line. The decision below is which pieces to pair for your specific tile.

How to Apply — 5 Steps

Prep the substrate

The floor or wall must be flat within the tile manufacturer’s tolerance. Correct the substrate before any clip goes in — clips cannot fix a bad base.

Set spacers at each joint

Place cross spacers on floors (or T-shaped on walls) at every joint to establish a consistent grout line.

Insert clips under tile edges

Push a clip under each tile edge as you lay — roughly 4 clips per 60×60 tile, about 11 per m².

Tap wedges into the clips

Insert a reusable PE wedge and tap it in until the tile edge is flush with its neighbour. Do not over-drive — excess tension reverses the lippage.

After cure, break and remove

Once the thinset cures (typically 24h), strike each clip head at the scored point so it snaps below the surface, pull the wedges, and grout.

Which clip model fits my tile thickness?
Clips BM-B01–B05 and BM-B07–B10 cover standard tile from 3–14mm; BM-B06 is the thick-tile version for 14–24mm. Pick the clip whose printed range includes your tile thickness — a clip rated for 3–10mm will not seat under a 16mm tile.
Are the wedges reusable?
Yes — the PE wedges are reusable across projects. Only the clips are single-use break-off. A common buying ratio is roughly 1 wedge for every 3–4 clips, because the wedge is pulled after cure and reused.
Do I still need spacers if I use clips?
Yes. Clips control the height (lippage); spacers control the width of the grout line. Most installers use both — cross spacers on floors, T-shaped on walls.
Will this system fix a wavy or unlevel floor?
No. Leveling clips and wedges fix the height difference between adjacent tiles — not an unlevel substrate. A floor that is out of flat within the tile manufacturer’s tolerance must be ground, patched or levelled before tiling; no clip can save a bad base.
