Step 1: Identify Low Spots
Use a straight edge or spirit level to identify uneven areas on the substrate before tiling. Mark low spots where tiles will need to be raised. Shims compensate for subfloor irregularities up to 6.5mm.
Step 2: Select the Correct Shim Thickness
Choose from 4 color-coded sizes: Yellow (1.5mm), Blue (3.0mm), Green (5.0mm), Red (6.5mm). For gradual transitions, stack shims in decreasing thickness to create a smooth ramp. The horseshoe design allows stacking without slipping.
Step 3: Slide Shim Under Tile Edge
Spread thin-set on the substrate. Set the tile in place, then slide the horseshoe shim under the tile edge that needs elevation. The U-shape opening wraps around the tile leveling clip strap — shims and clips work together in the same joint.
Step 4: Verify Level and Secure
Check alignment with a spirit level after inserting shims. Adjust as needed by adding or removing shims. Once level is confirmed, press the tile fully into the thin-set. The shim remains in place permanently under the tile — no removal needed before grouting.
