Why Large Format Tile Fails in the Middle
The problem is not lippage at the joints — it’s a panel that bows.
A 120×240 porcelain panel is fired at high heat and bows slightly, then the centre sinks as it cools. Lay it on a bed of mortar and the middle sags below the level you set at the edges — “centre lippage”, invisible in the box, obvious once the light hits the finished floor. Standard clips tension the joints, but a big panel needs pull-up force across its face and a system you can re-tension as the tile settles. Verify substrate flatness

Trowel full-coverage mortar
Large panels need a bigger notch and full back-buttering — hollow voids under a 120×240 tile are hard to hear and harder to fix.
Lift and seat the panel
Carry the panel with a suction lifter, set it on the mortar, and seat it flush with a rubber mallet — no flexing the panel by hand.
Tension in stages
Insert clips or spin bases every 10–12in along the long edges; tighten in two passes so the panel is pulled flat gradually, not forced.
Re-tension, then finish
With spin or reusable caps, re-tension after the initial set. After full cure, break or unscrew, remove, and grout.
