Tile Leveling Clip Thickness: Which Size Fits Your Grout Joint?

By Peter Zhang · September 11, 2026 · Updated October 4, 2026

The fastest way to waste a container of clips is to order them by tile thickness. The tile number never touches the joint — the clip's base thickness does. That flat section sits inside the grout line, sets its width, and takes the wedge pressure; order the wrong one and the joint you promised your customer is not the joint that gets laid. We are a China manufacturer running the full 10-model clip range in wholesale volumes, and this guide maps every base we ship — 9 sizes from 0.5 to 4.5mm across 45 model variants — so you can order by the number that actually matters.

Quick Answer
Choose clip base thickness from the specified grout joint: 1.0mm and 1.5mm are offered across all 10 current models, while the full range spans 0.5–4.5mm in 9 sizes.

Match the clip base to the grout joint width, never to the tile thickness — the base is the part that sits inside the joint.

Is Clip Thickness the Tile Thickness or the Joint Width?

Two numbers sit side by side on every clip spec sheet, and mixing them up is the single most common ordering error we see. The base thickness is the molded flat section at the bottom of the clip — it slides down into the grout joint between two tiles, and whatever it measures, the joint becomes. The tile capacity is the vertical clearance under the clip bridge — how thick a tile the clip can grip while the wedge presses down. A 1.5mm-base clip with 3–14mm capacity serves a 1.5mm joint under anything from a 6mm wall tile to a 14mm porcelain paver. The two numbers answer different questions: the first is decided by your grout specification, the second by your tile body.

On our range, capacity runs 3–14mm on nine of the ten models, with BM-B06 stretched to 14–24mm for thick slabs and BM-B10 topping out at 3–10mm as the light circular fine-joint option. If a customer asks "what thickness clip for 12mm porcelain?", the honest answer needs both numbers: any base in a 3–14mm-capacity model.

The 9 Base Sizes and the Joints They Serve

Tile joints follow trade conventions, and clip bases follow the joints. Here is the full ladder we mold, with the imperial equivalents buyers usually quote:

  • 0.5 / 0.7 / 0.8mm — precision fine joints on rectified tile installation; sub-1mm lines that only our light rectangular and circular models (B09, B10) and full-span B05 mold cleanly at this weight class.
  • 1.0mm (≈1/32″) — the rectified-tile standard: tight, machine-precise joints with minimal visible grout.
  • 1.5mm (≈1/16″) — the all-purpose default. Most porcelain and ceramic floors and walls land here, which is why all 10 models carry it.
  • 2.0mm — slightly eased metric joints; common on calibrated tile and outdoor porcelain.
  • 2.5mm (≈3/32″) — the cushion size for stone-look and lightly edged tile.
  • 3.0mm (≈1/8″) — wide joints for rustic, tumbled or cleft-edged natural stone.
  • 4.5mm — heavy exterior joints: deck tile, pavers, drainage-critical outdoor work. BM-B05 is the only model molding this base.

Bottom line: base thickness = joint width; tile capacity is a separate line on the same spec sheet. Select the base from the project joint specification, then verify the received variant against its exact model-and-thickness weight. Do not infer a universal weight progression: the published value for that exact pair is the reference.

1.0mm and 1.5mm exist in all ten models. The less widely offered sizes are model-specific: 0.7mm only in BM-B09, 0.8mm only in BM-B10 and 4.5mm only in BM-B05. If one assortment needs both fine and wide joint options, BM-B05 spans 0.5–4.5mm under one model code.

Weight-data boundary: all ten models are currently offered, and the table above publishes exact unit weights for every listed thickness. Bag and carton figures are a separate logistics dataset: standard-size rows were measured on 1.5mm and may differ slightly at 2.0mm, 2.5mm and 3.0mm. Do not calculate final pack weight by multiplying unit weight. Explicit BM-B05 0.5mm and 4.5mm rows use their own records. What Happens When the Base Is Wrong

  • Base wider than the joint — the fin cannot drop into a joint cut narrower than itself. Installers either force it (chipping the tile edge) or skip it (and the lippage control you paid for silently disappears).
  • Base narrower than the spec — the joint lays narrower than the drawing called for. Nobody notices until the inspector measures: a 3.0mm detail executed with 1.5mm bases is a rework conversation, and the clip supplier's name is not on it.
  • Base right, capacity wrong — a BM-B10 (3–10mm) asked to hold a 12mm porcelain body cannot close: the wedge bottoms out before it grips. Same photo on the quote, different tool in the box.
  • The reorder trap — clip variants are photo-identical across bases. Without the model code and a piece-weight check on arrival, six months later you restock 1.5mm and receive 2.0mm.

This is why the weight column in the table above is useful: a sample can be compared with the published value for the exact model and thickness received. Weight differences between adjacent thicknesses may be small and are not always monotonic, so weight supports variant and batch checks but does not replace the model label, thickness mark or dimensional measurement. The per-parameter method is laid out in our tile leveling system specification guide, and the full audit procedure in our guide to the tile leveling clips specification.

Pairing Wedges to Base Thickness

Wedge compatibility is determined by clip opening, wedge width, taper and operating travel, rather than by the clip's nominal joint width alone. Treat each model pairing as a fit question and sample-test any combination that is not explicitly recorded.

Two pairings are confirmed in the current product records: BM-A06 (70×15×14mm) pairs with BM-B07 and BM-B09, while BM-A07 (68×14×16.5mm) pairs with BM-B08. For other clip and wedge combinations, approve engagement and break behavior on a physical sample before the bulk order. The 3:1 pack ratio remains a planning format used in our kits (300 clips + 100 wedges + 1 pliers); project consumption still depends on the placement layout. The consumption method is in our clips per square metre guide.

Ordering by Thickness: Bags, MOQ, Price

The published family-level guide range is $0.70–0.85 per 100-piece bag FOB Ningbo at a 500-bag MOQ. Use it as a category reference; the current quotation must confirm the selected model, thickness, quantity and assortment mix. If your market needs a boxed set, the wholesale tile leveling kit contains 300 clips + 100 wedges + 1 pliers in joint widths 1.5–4.0mm, one thickness per set.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size tile leveling clips do I need for a 2mm grout joint?

A 2.0mm-base clip — nine of our ten models mold it (all except the small BM-B08). Confirm the tile body fits the model's capacity: 3–14mm covers 2mm-joint work on standard porcelain and ceramic; only body thickness above 14mm moves you to BM-B06.

Do I need different wedges for different clip thicknesses?

Not by joint width alone. Compatibility depends on the clip opening, wedge width, taper and operating travel. Current records confirm BM-A06 with BM-B07/B09 and BM-A07 with BM-B08; sample-test any unlisted pairing before bulk production.

Which clip thickness works for thick tiles or pavers over 14mm?

BM-B06 is the thick-tile model: 14–24mm tile capacity with bases from 1.0 to 3.0mm (five variants, 2.44–3.04g). The base still follows the joint — a 20mm paver laid on 3mm joints takes the BM-B06 3.0mm variant, not a special thick base.
